What began as a group of five friends taking on a daunting challenge quickly turned into an inspiring story of determination, community spirit, and generosity. Jude, Ethan, Jayden, Michael and Jack, set their sights on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Throat Cancer Foundation.
Now, we’re thrilled to share that not only did they complete the 24-mile trek across Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, but they also smashed their fundraising goal, raising an incredible £1,400.34 in support of people affected by throat cancer.
A Challenge Close to Home
For this group of friends, the challenge was more than just a physical test — it was deeply personal.
“Cancer has recently affected a close family member, and nobody deserves to go through that,” Ethan and Jude shared. “We believe cancer can be stopped, and that’s why we wanted to raise as much money as possible for the Throat Cancer Foundation.”
For Jayden, the cause struck a chord too.
“My great granddad battled throat cancer and survived, but we’ve lost other loved ones in our family to cancer. This challenge had real meaning for me.”
Despite their age and limited experience with endurance events, the group set an ambitious target: to finish the demanding circular route in under 12 hours — a tall order, even for seasoned hikers. But undeterred, they trained, motivated each other, and pushed through, step by step.
More Than Just Miles
The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge spans approximately 24 miles (38.6 km) and includes a total ascent of over 1,500 metres, covering some of the most rugged terrain in the Yorkshire Dales. But the lads took it in stride — because this was about more than just conquering mountains.
It was about honouring loved ones. About raising awareness. And about giving back.
They also made it clear that this challenge wasn’t only about donations — it was about spreading the word:
“We completely understand if people can’t donate. Just helping us share our story means more people learn about throat cancer and the work of the Foundation — and that’s just as important.”
Making a Real Impact
Thanks to their efforts, the £1,400.34 raised will go directly to helping the Throat Cancer Foundation continue its work supporting people diagnosed with throat cancers, educating the public on causes like HPV, and pushing for better awareness and prevention.
Gordon Dow, Trustee of the Foundation, commented:
“This group of young people has done something truly remarkable. Taking on such a tough physical challenge at their age, and raising over £1,400 in the process, is no small feat. Their determination and empathy are inspiring. The funds they’ve raised will go a long way in helping us support families, raise awareness, and campaign for change. We’re incredibly proud of them.”
A Huge Thank You
To Jude, Ethan, Jayden, Michael and Jack — thank you. You’ve not only completed a challenge many adults would hesitate to try, but you’ve also become champions for a cause that needs more voices like yours.
Your energy, passion and generosity will have a lasting impact.
