The BBC reports that HPV infections decreased in women aged 16 to 21 by 86% between 2010 and 2016.
This is a result of the HPV vaccine being offered to girls at the age of 12 or 13, and is very good news as HPV causes 99% of all cervical cancers, meaning that girls who are vaccinated are extremely unlikely to get it.
We are hopeful that after years of campaigning boys will soon be offered this vaccine too as HPV also causes:
- 40% of penile cancers
- 85% of anal cancers
- 25% of mouth cancers
- 35% of throat cancers
