Professor Hisham Mehanna is Director of the Institute of Head and Neck Studies and Education (www.InHANSE.org). He is also Chair of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Birmingham.
One of the UK’s leading head and neck clinicians and researchers, Professor Mehanna graduated from University of Glasgow. He completed his specialist training in Glasgow before undertaking a fellowship in Head, Neck and Thyroid surgery at the world–renowned Auckland Regional Head and Neck Unit in New Zealand, later becoming a consultant Head, Neck and Thyroid surgeon.
Professor Mehanna has a keen interest in clinical research, especially in clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of new interventions, therapeutic agents and biomarkers in head and neck and thyroid cancer. He runs a research team of over 20 members and holds over £12million in grants from the Health Technology Assessment Unit, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Research and industry.
He is currently Chair of the UK’s National Cancer Research Institute’s Head and Neck Group. He is also Chair of the Research Committee for the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, as well as serving on the council of the International Association of Oral Oncology.
