Taking on The Wall: Andi Woolass’s 70-Mile Challenge for Throat Cancer Awareness

When it comes to fundraising, few challenges are as physically and emotionally demanding as The Wall ultramarathon. Yet, for Andi Woolass, the 70-mile trek from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead’s Baltic Quay is more than just a test of endurance—it’s a deeply personal mission to raise awareness and funds for the Throat Cancer Foundation.

A Personal Battle

Throat cancer, encompassing oropharyngeal, head and neck, oral, and mouth cancers, often flies under the radar despite its devastating impact. Andi’s motivation stems from witnessing the profound effects of this disease on his brother-in-law, his wife, and their family. Early diagnosis is crucial, yet the myriad of symptoms can lead to delays in detection. Andi’s commitment to this cause is a testament to the urgent need for greater awareness and support.

The Challenge Ahead

Scheduled for 14 June 2025, The Wall ultramarathon is a grueling 70-mile journey along Hadrian’s Wall, featuring 3,500 feet of elevation gain. Andi candidly acknowledges the enormity of the task, especially considering he signed up while recovering from a torn calf and is currently 20 kg over his ideal weight. He admits, “Since I signed up to this in June this year, incidentally done whilst on crutches with a torn calf, I’ve probably not even managed to run a total of 70 miles… at 20 kg over my fighting weight and generally starting from scratch please know this isn’t going to be a walk in the hills… 26 hours of movement is going to test me physically both mentally.”

Supporting the Cause

The Throat Cancer Foundation is the only UK-based charity dedicated exclusively to throat cancers. Their mission encompasses improving treatment processes, developing better cures, supporting patients and medical professionals, and educating the public on prevention. Andi’s fundraising efforts have already garnered significant support, raising over £3,800, with additional contributions through Gift Aid.
