Turning Pain into Purpose: Rachel Neave Raises £2,483.25 for the Throat Cancer Foundation

On Sunday, 27th April, Rachel Neave completed the London Marathon, raising an incredible £2,483.25 for the Throat Cancer Foundation. But Rachel’s story is about far more than just a marathon — it’s about love, resilience, and a commitment to change lives.

In 2020, in the heart of the COVID-19 lockdown, Rachel’s world was turned upside down when Martin, her husband was diagnosed with throat cancer. It came out of the blue. The cause was not the virus everyone feared that year, but another one most people barely think about: HPV — the human papillomavirus.

What We Didn’t Know Could Hurt Us

Like many, Rachel and Martin had no idea that HPV could lead to cancer. They were told it was viral, something Martin had likely carried unknowingly for decades. It had remained dormant, invisible, until one day it developed into throat cancer.

HPV is incredibly common — most adults will have it at some point in their lives. For the vast majority, it causes no harm and is cleared by the immune system without symptoms. But for some, it stays in the body and, years or even decades later, can trigger cancers like Martin’s.

There were no warnings. No symptoms. Until it was too late.

Left Reeling

Rachel describes feeling utterly at a loss: How did this happen? What would it mean for us? For the future? No one prepares you for a diagnosis like this, especially when the cause is something you never even knew to be worried about. It was a confusing, frightening time.

That’s when the Throat Cancer Foundation became a lifeline.

A Lifeline and a Mission

The Foundation not only helped Rachel and Martin navigate the storm, but it also opened their eyes to the importance of prevention. Early vaccination against HPV can protect children — both boys and girls — from developing HPV-related cancers later in life. Awareness of this is critical.

Rachel reflects, We had never heard of this before Martin’s diagnosis. But now, we want every parent, every partner, every family to know. Because knowledge can save lives.

The Throat Cancer Foundation continues to support families like Rachel and Martin’s, offering vital information, a strong voice, and a community in what can otherwise feel like a silent and lonely experience.

Rachel’s Message: Talk, Learn, Protect

Rachel’s fundraising efforts are a testament to turning personal pain into purpose. She urges everyone to take away one crucial message: Talk about HPV. Get informed. And if you can, vaccinate your children.

She adds, We wish we had known sooner — we truly do.

The Throat Cancer Foundation thanks Rachel for her incredible efforts and invites supporters to help spread this life-saving message.
